My friend Z and I were near Vicker's & Academy at lunch to check on an order at the AT&T store, and as long as we were there, he told me about Viva El Taco, right next door. It's kind of hard to see the restaurant signs, its peeled off on one side of the building, and obscured by trees on the other, but there is a third sign out on Academy that is still visible.
The place basically serves fast food Mexican, but way more authentic than Taco Bell or its ilk. I ordered a Carene Asada plate, no rice, extra beans. It came with 3 flour tortillas. I also ordered some chips with guacamole.
I found a table, and almost sat down. Almost, because as I was sitting, I noticed a disgusting blob of... something... on my chair. It looked like a thick, wet, circle of milkshake - at least thats what I hope it was. I quickly swapped chairs, then sat.
The meat was cooked just a tad too much, but still had good flavor. I was able to build little soft tacos with the veggie mix and meat that tasted great. The chips and guacamole looked better than it tasted. The guacamole was surprisingly plain, having almost no flavor at all.
In all, Viva El Taco wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. The food is cheap and acceptable, and if your in the mood for something different, quick and inexpensive on the north end, it could be a good place to check out.
