Southern BBQ At Mr. B's Mr. B's

This restaurant is no longer in business.

After eating at King's Chef last week, I decided to try out the only other tiny Valentine diner in town - Mr. B's. It's located on the corner of northeast corner of Cimmerron and Sierra Madre, and is easy to miss if you blink.

I walked in, and Mr. B himself greeted me at the counter. He was a friendly older man who didn't move too fast and walked with a limp. I asked how long he'd been in business, and he told me 31 years. He's been at this location for just over a year, but previously had a store on Las Vegas Ave. He also boasted about being the best bbq around, and having had a book written about his restaurant (I could find no evidence of this on the internets). His specialty is Southern style bbq.

I ordered a cheesesteak sandwich, but unfortunately, I was told he couldn't make that today. So I asked him what he recommended, and he told me, "Southern pork". Sounded good, so I told him I'd take it.

It took a while to get my food, but I just sat there reading a copy of The Independent, and soaking up the charm of the tiny little diner building. When my food arrived, it looked great. The buns were heavly toasted, but not burnt. The pork was completely coated in sauce, not dry. The fries looked good, and were very fresh - he may have cut them on the spot.

The fries looked better than they were. They tasted alright, but they were extremely greasy, and a bit too soft for my liking. The sandwich on the other hand, tasted every bit as good as it looked. The sauce was slighly sweet with a nice tangy bite, and the pork was cooked perfectly, and shredded consistently. Delicious. I had a root beer to wash it all down, and you can't really go wrong with that!

The most unique and amazing part of my visit was that Mr B didn't talk about price. He didn't ask for money when he took my order. He didn't ask for money when he gave me my food. The subject of payment wasn't broached at all until I was completely done, stood up, and asked "how much do I owe you?" He almost seemed surprised that I offered to pay - it felt like I was a guest at his home. In the end the price was very fair for the meal - just under 8 bucks for a sandwich, fries, and a drink.
