My friend Sean suggested Mediterranean Cafe for lunch. At first I resisted, but I eventually relented because I couldn't think of anything else. Boy am I glad we came here - it was spectacular!
It is a pretty small place with a unique look. It has a sloped roof and maybe half a dozen tables. It isn't full service, so we walked up to the counter and ordered. They have a great special that includes a sandwich, drink, and a salad or fries for around 8 bucks. I got the special with a gyro sandwich, and a mushroom & olive salad.
The salad was awesome. I love mushrooms and olives. It had oil and vinegar, and some other spices and seasonings as well. It was really good.
The gyro was loaded with lamb. I mean, this thing had a lot of meat on it. Everything worked perfectly together with the lone exception of too many red onions. No big deal, I just picked some off. I really liked the creamy green stuff - they called it Tzatziki, which is kind of a light cucumbery yoghurt. Anyways, it was quite good.
While we were eating, we noticed a shaker with a reddish powder in it on the table. I asked an employee (who I later realized was one of the owners) what it was, and she told us it was Sumac, although she reassured us that it wasn't the poisonous North American variety. She then informed us that it was ground from a berry, had a lemon flavor, and was a fairly common spice in Middle Eastern food. Thanks for the lesson! I threw some on my gyro, but had a hard time distinguishing its flavor from the rest of the sandwich - I'll have to try more next time.
If you like Gyros, Pitas, Kabobs, etc, you must come here. There are quite a few Gyro places in the Springs, but this is far superior to any others I've had. I will definitely come here again - and soon!
