Smiles Cost Extra Magic Wok

This little dive has been here for years - I remember the food being average, and the prices being insanely inexpensive. It hasn't changed much.

My friend Sean got here before I did, and told the waitress there would be a total of three people. Z decided not to go at the last minute, so when I arrived alone, the waitress looked visibly annoyed that there were only two of us, not three, and even let out an audible sigh as she removed the extra place setting from the table. What enthusiasm!

The waitress was so unenthusiastic about her job that the entire time we were there she spoke in a flat monotone, and usually in single syllables. It got to the point where Sean and I were actually laughing about it, it was so bizarre. The upside was that the prices are so cheap, we figured they just couldn't afford to hire enthusiastic employees.

When I say the place is cheap, I mean CHEAP. Four and a half bucks will buy your entire lunch - soup, hot tea, eggroll, fried rice, and a main dish. Sean and I both ordered the Mongolian beef.

The soup was very good, if a big peppery.

The portions aren't huge, but they are definitely adequate for lunch, and for $4.50, how can you complain? I hate peas, but fortunately there were only three in my fried rice, so I easily picked them out. The worst part of the meal was that everything was sweet. The rice, beef, onions.. all very sweet. I'm not exactly sure what was causing it - it wasn't from a single sauce poured over everything, but it was there, and permeated the entire meal. It wasn't exactly bad, but given the choice, I could definitely do without.

Even with the ridiculously bored waitress, I'll still go back. The food was reasonable, and the price can't be beat. Lunch for two ran $9.70, after tax. Thats just crazy.
