Corndog Please! Amanda's Fonda
Eaten by Richard

Amanda's has a nice patio, next to the stream on West Colorado. I was looking forward to sitting out there, but my two compatriots (Forrest and Z) totally wussed out on me. "I want air conditioning!" they cried. Ok, ok, so we sat inside. I was worried that there'd be a wait, but it was dead, so we were seated right away.

We were immediately served a bowl of salsa and some fresh chips. I really loved the salsa, it was chunky, and flavorful, but not hot.

The front page of the menu had a funny FAQ on it. Questions like "Why don't you have better silverware?" and "Why do you use plastic cups?" were answered ("It gets stolen", and "Glass breaks"). Another one on there was "Do you have anything without cilantro, onions, tomatos, etc?". The answer: "Yes, a corndog".

When the waitress came to take our order, the first thing Forrest asked, seriously, was "Do you have anything without cilantro?" The waitress answered with the only thing she could have: "Yes, a corndog". Unsatisfied, he ordered something else (I can't remember what, but he seemed to enjoy it).

I ordered the Pollo Borracho, which comes with your choice of corn or flour tortillas (I got corn). It is an awesome mix of chicken, black and green olives, and tons of spices and seasonings (including cilantro, which I love!)

The corn tortillas were wrapped up in the aluminum foil. Basically, you just load it up with the chicken/olive mix and eat it by hand. Unfortunately, it only came with 3 corn tortillas, but enough food for 6 or 8. And the waitress was nowhere to be seen. I didn't wait too long before I just started eating it with my fork.

Usually I don't eat Spanish rice, but they have a knack for making it not suck. In fact, it was delicious, and I ate it all.

I definitely can't complain about their food, it is absolutely top notch. The service wasn't perfect, but it wasn't horrible. The real killer for me here was the price. My food plus a drink totaled $13.73, without tip! After a tip, I was out sixteen bucks! That's not a cheap lunch. There are other options on the menu (a "create your own" combo can run 7 or 8 bucks), but they didn't look nearly as good as what I got. Such is life.

Maybe I should have ordered a corndog.

It looks like their Pollo Borracho consists of soggy french fries with olives on them. Does that taste like chicken?
