There are a lot of Mexican Restaurants in The Springs, but only a handful of them really stand out as something special. The tiny, unassuming, El Taco Rey really takes the crown for having some amazing, possibly authentic (I'm not sure - I'm white), delicious food. Very few restaurants of any kind can compete with the grub to be found here.
The locals know that this is the place to go for lunch. Its not open for dinner, or on the weekends, so lunch is all you get. If you don't get here before noon, there will be a line to the door, possibly out the door. There are only five tables inside the restaurant, and two picnic tables on the sidewalk, so seating is at a premium.
My friend Z and I arrived at about 11:30, and were able to order right away. I almost aways get two Avacado-Pork Burritos, because - and trust me on this - they are the most amazing burritos on the planet. If we could only get all of the world leaders to eat these at the same time, we'd have world peace. Really.
They look kind of messy, and without the proper technique, they can be. The trick is to hold it level as you eat, and try to pinch one end so the filling doesn't squeeze out. Its an acquired skill, and you will love eating tons of these babies practicing.
I haven't quite decided what merits a perfect score on my site, but this is about the closest thing I can think of. I'm going to refrain, only because I didn't come on a Tuesday, which is when they also have taquitos for 50 cents each, a great compliment to any awesome El Taco Rey meal.
Z and I decided to make it an all Mexican week, and El Taco Rey has set the bar awfully high. We're going to do our best to find some great Mexican food in Colorado Springs this week, so enjoy!

Well, I figure if I'm going to be Mexican all week, our lunches might as well be.
